POSITION: College and Career Coach (One in Newton County and one in Searcy County) STARTING DATE: January, 2010 JOB DUTIES: The college and career coach will work with identified high schools in Newton or Searcy County school districts to provide college and career guidance to eligible students and families. This is a 12 month grant-funded position with at least nine of the twelve months operating from schools in the Newton or Searcy County districts. This is a three-year pilot project with an initial contract from January through June 2010. Annual renewals are contingent upon continued program funding. The coaches will be college employees working as members of a Local Career Guidance Team at the various high schools to be served. While the college has ultimate supervision responsibilities, the various high school Principals, as leaders of the local teams, will provide direct supervision to the career coach. Coaches must complete training as a Career Development Facilitator (CDF is a twenty week on-line course.)
Duties will include activities such as:
· Providing outreach to low-income students and their parents with information about postsecondary education as well as accurate information on how to prepare, apply, and pay for postsecondary education · Providing interest inventories and skills assessments to assist individuals in making informed career decisions · Providing information on careers, career pathways, and education requirements for individuals · Connecting low-income students to support services that will ease the transition to postsecondary education · Connecting youth and adults to "bridge programs" that will prepare them for academic pursuit or job placement · Connecting students to early college programs, Advanced Placement classes, and CTE and concurrent-credit enrollment · Attending state training and informational meetings as required · Maintaining office records, contact information, and time and expense reports to comply with the grant objectives · Meeting the following performance measures: six-year career plans for all students; increased high school graduation rate; increased enrollment in Smart Core; increased college-going rate; reduced need for college remediation; increased ACT scores; increased application for state and federal financial aid.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree with either teaching or experience living in a rural, isolated community or school district. Prefer an individual with either counseling, teaching, or community service background. The successful candidate must pass a criminal background check.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must have reliable transportation with ability to drive, able to walk moderate distances, maintain a positive attitude, communicate effectively with adults and teenagers, and encourage a cooperative, enthusiastic environment with colleagues and clients.
SALARY & BENEFITS: Salary estimate of $31,651 plus a full benefit package.
